WAWFL Grand Finals Preview

The 2010 WAWFL Grand Finals take place this Sunday, 5 September, at EFTel Oval, Perth.

Coastal Titans will take on Swan Districts in the Division 1 Grand Final at 2.30pm. Swan Districts finished the year at the top of the ladder with an unbeaten record in the regular season. It was not until they faced the Titans in the Semi-Final of this year's finals series that they suffered their first defeat with the Titans edging a very close game. Swans hit back in the Preliminary Final ousting last year's Premiers, East Fremantle.

WA girls to compete for national honours

The Western Australian Youth Girls team will head to Melbourne on September 6 for the first ever AFL National Youth Girls Carnival.

The team, consisting of 28 players under the age of 18, will compete against South Australia, Queensland, ACT/NSW and Victoria in a bid for national honours.

As part of the promotion of the national carnival the AFL started the “Follow the Flight of the Ball” initiative which saw a pink ball sent to each state to be photographed with famous icons or people, including Julia Gillard.

Schoolgirls compete for Tan Cup

GIRLS from Churchlands Senior High School and Warwick Senior High School competed for the annual Tan Cup blockbuster at Warwick late in Term 2, with Churchlands claiming a narrow two-goal victory in a close contest.

The Tan Cup is a competition is organised by Chris Tan (Churchlands SH) and his father Ray (Warwick SH) to showcase the talents of girls in the game of Australian Rules Football.

Both father and son are coaches at their respective schools for the Smarter than Smoking Girls Football competition.

To expose the girls of both teams to the finer points of footy, Dan Barnes and representatives from the Claremont District were present to conduct a coaching clinic before the game.

Funding boost aims to increase females coaching football

The West Perth Football District located in Perth’s Northern Suburbs has been given a huge boost in their aim to grow and develop female football.

The West Perth District was recently awarded $2000 from the Australian Sports Commission to put 18 female football coaches through Level 1 Coaching Accreditation programs in early 2011.

The Sport Leadership Grants for Women program is an initiative of the Australian Government that is managed by the Australian Sports Commission in partnership with the Australian Government's Office for Women.

Schoolgirls battle for glory

JOHN Septimus Roe ACS and Corpus Christi College celebrated grand final success at Arena Joondalup after taking out their respective divisions in the 2010 Smarter than Smoking Schoolgirls Cup.

For John Septimus Roe (pictured left) it was their second Moore Division title in three years after defeating St Brigid’s College by 6 points, while for Corpus Christi College (pictured below) it was their first White Division title, defeating St Stephen’s Carramar by 7 points.

In front of a large crowd and in a terrific promotion for female football, the grand finals were played as the curtain raiser to the Joondalup Falcons versus Swan Districts WAWFL matches.
