New in 2010! Freo House Footy - Register

Freo House Footy (formerly AFL Recreational Football)has been developed to provide an opportunity for all Australian Football enthusiasts to enjoy participating in a modified game that has strong parallels with the traditional game. Freo House Footy is designed so that everyone can play; it is less physically demanding, has a minimal time commitment, with a major emphasis on fun and safety (non-contact). Freo House Footy can be conducted as part of the AFL SEPEP program and can be played in any Term with variations to suit your school.

Requirements for Schools to implement Freo House Footy:

  • Competition must run for a minimum of 6 games and/or weeks
  • Competition to be coordinated by the AFL School Ambassador or nominated teacher

The WA Football Commission will provide a FREE Freo House Footy Kit (valued at $350) to the first fifty (50) schools who register to participate in an intra school competition. The Freo House Footy Kit includes:

  • Class set of Freo House Footy bibs
  • 5 x synthetic footballs
  • 2 x goal posts and 2 x point posts
  • 1 x AFL Rec Footy CD-ROM

NOTE: All schools that register for Freo House Footy prior to the end of Term 1 will go into a draw to play an exhibition game prior to the Fremantle v Sydney game on Saturday 14 August.

AFL School Ambassador Program - Register

Australian Football (AFL) is fun, exciting and a great way to encourage students to participate in sport. Australian Football can also be used in many curriculum activities to enhance learning outcomes. Over 850 Primary and Secondary teachers have joined the AFL School Ambassador team (AFLSA) to receive quality resources and use football as a vehicle to achieve many positive outcomes for their school and students. To use a football analogy the AFL School Ambassador would be the“Matt Priddis or Paul Haselby” of your school - gathering the latest football information and ‘handballing’ it off to the relevant members of the school community to run and kick goals with.

The next induction day for new AFL School Ambassadors has been proposed for Tuesday 16 March, 2010 at Subiaco Oval, with other courses in country WA in April and May.

You Kick Like a Girl - Good for you!

YEAR 8/9 SCHOOLGIRLS ONE DAY CARNIVALS

Smarter than Smoking Development Officers will continue to offer interested schools the opportunity to participate in one-day lightning carnivals to provide opportunities for school girls to either try football in a safe and fun environment, and/or enhance their football skills developed through their PE program.

Coach Education

The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) places a major emphasis on presenting a range of coach education programs to provide teachers with the skill and knowledge to confidently coach their school football teams. In lieu of running a SHS coaching course at Subiaco Oval this year, we have decided to offer interested teachers (maximum of 20) the opportunity attend one of our community based level one youth coaching courses. The WAFC will cover all associated costs. Interested teachers are asked to contact your District / Regional Development Manager to reserve your place.

COACH SEMINARS

These seminars are open to all school football coaches and aim to educate school football coaches in the areas of skill development, team play and team development. These seminars are presented by AFL and WAFL coaches and are free to all school coaches. Further information will be circulated once dates/presenters have been confirmed.

Resource Assistance Scheme

The Resource Assistance Scheme aims to financially assist football friendly schools in purchasing jumpers for school football teams and/or equipment to enhance the teaching of Australian Football within the school. Schools will need to meet set criteria and that the provision of the ‘grant’ will lead to a potential growth in participation. These grants will be determined on an individual needs basis and managed by the District / Regional Managers in consultation with the WAFC.

Travel Subsidy

To assist with travel costs incurred by participating in school football, a figure of $5,000 will be available for disbursement at the conclusion of each competition (Smarter than Smoking Cup/s & Belt Up Cup), based on the total distance traveled by each school. This subsidy will be managed by the WAFC.

AFL Goal Post Subsidy

The AFL Goal Post subsidy aims to financially assist football friendly schools to purchase permanent Australian Football goal posts. Goal posts provide a visible presence of our game at a school level and help to grow our games community capacity. These grants will be managed by the WAFC in consultation with District / Regional Managers.

Multicultural Football

The WAFC fully endorses the Community Multicultural Program (CMP) to facilitate the future growth of our game. The WAFC recognises that Australian Rules Football has the capacity to bring people together from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds in a traditional sport engrained in Australian culture. The program is building strong relationships through consultation with many diverse communities to develop strategies to encourage participation.

Participation in the CMP will benefit schools through;

  • Achieve literacy and numeracy outcomes for students with English as the second language
  • Assist CALD youth in being more active through Australian Rules Football
  • Create links between school participation and community clubs
  • Students get an opportunity to learn great life skills through sport; teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, fair play.

For further information on how your school can get involved in the program contact Russell Higgins, WAFC Multicultural Officer on 0400 037 417.

Umpiring

Umpiringteaches you ‘life skills’ such as tolerance, assertiveness, leadership, decision making and management.

Umpiring is a great way for both males and females to keep fit and involved in the game.

Umpiring allows you to earn money while servicing the game you love!!

Umpiring is a great opportunity; do you have what it takes?
