CBC Fremantle takes out WAFC Schoolboys Cup Cable Division

The 2011 WAFC Schoolboys Cup competition concluded on the weekend with Christian Brothers College Fremantle winning their first ever WAFC Schoolboys Cup Cable Division Grand Final since the competition’s inception in 1988.

The game was evenly poised at half time with some fantastic skills on display. After the break CBC broke away with the aid of a three goal breeze to eventually run out winners by 36 points.

This year’s grand final was played as the curtain raiser to the Fremantle v Hawthorn AFL match at Patersons Stadium.

The WAFC Schoolboys Cup competition is the largest upper secondary school football competition in WA, with 3250 students from over 130 metropolitan and country schools competing this year.

Over the 24 years the competition has been running approximately 55,000 boys have participated.

One of the major directions of the WA Football Commission and School Sport WA when the competition was set up was to re-establish Australian Rules Football in all Secondary Schools.

Over the years football has provided the vehicle where values like loyalty, teamwork, respect, leadership, mateship, endeavour and integrity are taught.

Both Grand Final teams demonstrated these qualities in a highly skilled display and true sportsman’s like manner.

Barry Cable, WA and AFL Hall of Fame member was on hand to present the WAFC Schoolboys Cup and medallions to the players, coaches and umpires.

Harley Van der Wielen (CBC) and Sam Callow (St Stephens) were presented with the special WAFC match balls as recognition for being their school’s best players in the grand final.

The Rhys Kampen Memorial Medal was awarded to Kieran Thompson from CBC for his outstanding contributions throughout the competition.

WAFC Schools Competitions Manager Clayton Anderson said The West Australian Football Commission greatly appreciated the support received from School Sport WA for the contribution of the WAFC Schoolboys Cup.

“On behalf of the Commission I would also like to sincerely thank those teachers who gave up their time to coach a school football team in the 2011 Schoolboys Cup competition,” Mr Anderson said.
