The West Australian Football League is hoping to equal last year’s record breaking attendance figure, with 9500 supporters needed at this weekend’s preliminary final between East Perth and Swan Districts to reach the total.
Last year was the first time since before WA became a two-team AFL state that the WAFL had over 200,000 spectators for a home and away season – a feat that was repeated this year.
The attendance total climbed to 213,080 after last weekend’s semi final round, only 1.7% down on last year’s season, where attendance reached 216,720 at the end of the semi final round.
This year’s semi final round drew 11,855 spectators, which was the best crowd since 1995.
WAFL Operations Manager Clint Roberts said the attendance figures reflected the quality of this year’s competition and the interest surrounding the fight to the finish for top four positions.
“We had a very close finish to the season and I think because all of the teams left in the finals are going in with a realistic chance of winning, their supporters are more likely to come along,” Mr Roberts said.
With a Grand Final spot up for grabs in this weekend’s game, the WAFL is anticipating more record breaking crowds at Claremont Oval and Steel Blue Oval.
