WA Football Facilities Fund

The WAFC considers unisex amenities (change room and umpires rooms), improved lighting and playing surface upgrades as high strategic priorities to accommodate the exponential growth and changing landscape of participation  in sport. This priority is highlighted across our strategic documents including the All Abilities & Inclusion Strategy, the Women’s Footy Vision Strategy 2021-2030, and the WAFC Facilities Strategy 2020-2030. 

The WAFC has teamed with the AFL to develop the WA Football Facilities Fund, to create safer and more inclusive spaces for community sport venues where football is played. From elite to local grassroots venues, the fund will enhance facilities for all ages and all abilities. 

The aim of the program is to:

• Maximise available carrying capacity of existing venues and the quality/functionality of supporting infrastructure.
• Develop increased supply through construction of new ovals, especially in growing communities, in a variety of traditional or innovative settings.
• Provide inclusive and accessible facilities that cater for the diversity of participants, particularly all genders and all-ability participants, that wish to participate in our game.
• Develop venues to support the elite game and the sport’s complete talent pathway, umpiring, staff, landmark heritage sites and people working and volunteering within the game.
• Enable planning and project partnerships to form with a range of government and non-government bodies to result in an improved quantity, quality, and welcoming venue network for Australian football.

Up to 10% of total project cost available through this fund, up to a maximum of $50,000.

WAFC Strategic Facilities Plan

The WAFC Strategic Facilities Plan provides an integrated and strategic approach to the future planning and provision of football infrastructure across all metropolitan and country regions.  The plan is delivered in two parts and provides a 10-year road map for prioritising stakeholder investment into facility development projects to address the immediate and long term needs of football, government and community stakeholders.

The Key Findings Report highlights the state of play for football infrastructure across metropolitan and country regions.  It summarises the key issues and focus areas identified through extensive research, participation analysis, facility auditing and stakeholder consultation.  The Report considers the AFL’s Preferred Facility Guidelines, the latest participation and facility trends, and the impact for football on forecast population growth and demographic change.

The AFL Preferred Facility Guidelines should be used by State and Territory Australian Football Controlling Bodies, Councils, Leagues, Clubs, Schools and associated stakeholders to inform the provision and development of appropriate facilities for community level Australian Football venues.

WA Football Facility of the Year Awards

The award aims to promote and celebrate the provision of well positioned, welcoming, accessible, fit for purpose football facilities that support our growing game’s strategic priorities. Western Australia’s winning project will be nominated for the National AFL Ken Gannon Community Football Facilities Awards.

To be eligible the project must have direct links and benefit to an Australian Rules Football club in Western Australia.

Eligible nominating organisations are:

• Community Football & Sporting Clubs

• Local Government Organisations

• Schools or Universities

• WAFL Clubs

The project works must have been completed within the past twelve (12) months, with the venue accessible for the 2024 season.

Nominations for 2024 will open July - August, with announcements in September

Ken Gannon Community Football Facility Awards

The AFL Ken Gannon Community Football Facilities Awards annually recognise best practise in community football facility development across Australia, along with the people, clubs and other stakeholders driving our best projects.

In a decorated career across many areas of the code, Ken spent much of his last decade of his career developing the AFL’s interest and partnerships in the community facilities space, leading outcomes related to over 800 community football facility projects in that period.

WAFC PILA Goal Post Subsidy 

The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC), in partnership with our exclusive goal post and flag pole supplier PILA, are pleased to announce the WAFC PILA Goal Post Subsidy Program.

The subsidy program is extended to all WA clubs and/or affiliations, including schools and councils, as approved by WAFC.

The program will run annually over the next 3 years, and applicants will be able to apply for a max of $1000 subsidy (Can only receive one successful grant over this period).

8 metro and 8 regional applications will be approved each year by WAFC.

Applications for the 2024 round will open May - July.

Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC)

Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF)

The purpose of the CSRFF program is to provide Western Australian Government financial assistance to community groups and local government authorities to develop basic infrastructure for sport and recreation.

The program aims to increase participation in sport and recreation, with an emphasis on physical activity, through rational development of sustainable, good quality, well-designed and well-utilised facilities.

The Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) can assist Australian non-profit, incorporated and other eligible organisations such as the following with sport related projects:
