Wiluna Martu Eagles host Dalkeith Nedlands JFC Monday, October 12, 2020 - 1:49 PM

Each year, Wiluna Martu Eagles and Dalkeith Nedlands Junior Football Club take it in turns to host an annual football game - a trip coordinated by the Murlpirrmarra Connection.  Bringing together players from vastly different backgrounds, the game promotes and celebrates team spirit, cultural understanding and respect, and healthy living.

For the 12th match-up, Dalkeith Nedlands Junior Football Club travelled to Wiluna stopping off in Mount Magnet for a game on the way.

Slightly different to previous years, 2020 was the first year Dalkeith Nedlands played against the Mount Magnet Miners. In what was a tight game, both teams played well with Mount Magnet nabbing a 1-point victory against the away side.

Saturday was another day of travel for the Dalkeith Nedlands cohort, driving to Wiluna where they had a night of cultural activities. The Dalkeith Nedlands players were treated by hosts, Wiluna Martu Eagles, to a feast of kangaroo and damper, art, and a buddy questionnaire.

Sunday was game day and when Martu Eagles came out firing it looked very likely they would keep Dalkeith Nedlands from getting a win this trip. Dalkeith Nedlands managed to claw their way back, nabbing their third victory over the past 12 years, with a three-point win.

On the field the economic, social, and cultural differences between the players became obsolete, with both games played being a tight contest. Over the years, the partnership between the two teams has strengthened and is now a mutually respectful rivalry, producing some thrilling football games and many lasting friendships. A credit to everyone involved.

In 2021 Wiluna Martu Eagles will be travelling the 1,100kms to Perth to be the away team against Dalkeith Nedlands Junior Football Club.
